Short Essay on Indian Martial Art- 'Thang-ta' (150 Words)

The history of 'Thang-ta' can be traced to the 17th century. Thang-ta or huyen lallong is a weapon-based Indian martial art created by the Meitei of Manipur. Thang means a sword and Ta is a spear. Thang-ta, therefore, is a fight involving a sword and a spear against one or more opponents. Thang-ta and other martial art forms were used with great success by the Manipuri kings to fight against the British for a long time. Another unique feature of Thang-ta is its women fighters.

Thang-ta is practiced in three different ways. The first way is absolutely ritualistic in nature related to tantric practices. The second way consists of spectacular performances involving sword and spear dances. These dances can be converted into actual fighting practices. The third way is the actual fighting technique. The fascinating Manipuri dance also traces its origin from this martial art.
